Spoke to a homeless guy today

Offered him a cig. He said nah.

He explained that people always offer him things that he does not want and to him that is useless.

It made me think.

The world always assumes what you want but they never ask you what you truly need.

When it comes to helping people out it is important to take into consideration what may help them and what is absolutely useless to them. But if he is a beggar and I give him food and he tells me he doesnt want turkey he wants cheese then that is just being greedy. In arabic there is a saying in arabic "shahhad w msharat" which means beggar and demander. It is your job as someone trying to help or give to assess a situation and try to be helpful and it is the beggar's job to be grateful and either accept or decline the offer but never complain.

I understand the "beggars can't be choosers" philosophy but the way I see it is that if my intention is to purely feed him and support him then I am willing to work with him and fit his needs and/or wants as my goal is not to purely feed him a turkey sandwich for whatever reason.

But, if he chooses to starve instead of accepting my turkey sandwich then that would his choice.
